In 2013, my life was full of golf, slow pitch softball and surfing. I had a friend who was going through a terrible separation. He signed up for CrossFit and I was urged to tag along for moral support. I wasn’t excited because I googled CrossFit…enough said. But after the first class, I was “all in”.

I’ve coached in boxes in California and Hawaii. When a Head Coach position at CrossFit Waipi`o (CFW) became available, I jumped at the chance to make a career out of CrossFit. A couple years later, the owner expressed his desire to sell CFW. Being a Head Coach and running a gym for two years is very different than owning a gym, but I felt that I was ready for the challenge and my next chapter in CrossFit.

As a coach/owner, members often come up to me say they are thankful for the gym. They feel at home in the gym. They feel better in their daily life. It excites me that CFW is a space for everyone to become healthy, where you can learn about nutrition and have accountability. Everyone has the potential of being a healthier version of themselves. Just come in and start to feel better!

The importance of health & fitness has been an ever-present theme throughout my life. My journey started at 17 years old when I was  diagnosed with a serious heart condition that required open heart surgery. In 2005, I was diagnosed with spinal degeneration, and underwent a lumbar spinal fusion. During that time period, my love of life and appreciation for what the body and mind is capable of, drastically changed for the better.

In 2013 I found CrossFit, and immediately became immersed in it. I was drawn to the well-rounded focus on both high intensity training and weightlifting, not to mention the strong community aspect not seen in other fitness gyms. I started coaching in 2014. In late 2015, I was faced with another obstacle of undergoing a second spinal fusion. Going into that surgery as a healthy and strong individual helped the healing process immensely. My surgeon attributed my recovery to my CrossFit training. This experience fueled my decision to make coaching my profession.

In 2017 I started coaching on a full-time basis. My mission is to help others find confidence in themselves, overcome physical limitations, and discover their full potential. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing someone reach a goal that they never thought was possible. I continue my own fitness journey with CrossFit, Outrigger Canoe Paddling, hiking, downhill skiing, bicycling, and always pursuing new adventures.

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer (CF-L1), Burgener Strength Weightlifting L1, Nutrition I Certificate

Small town girl, born and raised, in Makawao, Maui. I pursued my nursing career with a Bachelor of

Science in Nursing from UH Hilo; followed by a military career as an Army Nurse Corp Officer. In 2010, CrossFit was first introduced to me in a home garage with Raw Fitness Maui. The first workout consisted of the basic pushups, pull ups, and a run, which held the Army’s Physical Fitness test to another standard. My husband and I began our CrossFit journey with Crossfit Oahu in 2011, and quickly fell in love with the community and the sport.

As a cardiac nurse, I assess, treat, and educate my patients in the acute state of illness back towards their basic standards of life. As an Army Officer, I develop my subordinates and peers with the “Can do.”attitude to complete the mission at task. As a CrossFit coach, I can help others in reaching their fitness goals. As you can see, every day and all aspects of life intertwine, and is an opportunity to developing a plan to achieving a greater You and sustaining a healthy lifestyle, physically and mentally.

Being a mom, night nurse, and Army Soldier, I’ve had to learn how to stretch, adapt, and balance life’s demands. I wouldn’t ask others of themselves if I wouldn’t be willing to do it myself. I desire to help others in reaching their greater potential than they could imagine about themselves.

I am overall passionate about making myself available to His plans and being utilized as a vessel in the community via women’s small group, nursing, military, and coaching.

Outside of CrossFit, you can find myself and my family, mostly at the baseball and soccer fields, church, hiking, or on the beach

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer (CF-L1)

I grew up in Sweden but moved to the United States more than 20 years ago to pursue a career flying airplanes for a living. In early 2001, I was offered a job with a small airline on Maui and moved from Oklahoma to Hawaii. My intention was to stay for a year to gain some more experience and then move back to the mainland. However, I ended up staying much longer than that.

I met my amazing wife, had two beautiful children, and made Hawaii my forever home. Around 2010, I was introduced to CrossFit by a friend and really enjoyed it. I was especially intrigued by how much more intense the workouts became when you engaged in some playful competition with your friends, and truly enjoyed the sense of community at the gym.

There are two aspects of CrossFit that I have really taken to heart. First, nutrition is the foundation of health and fitness. The CrossFit prescription of eating meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar is pretty simple but powerful. Second, all workouts can be scaled to any individual’s fitness level. I look forward to helping you make every workout suitable and effective.

Aloha!  Born and raised in beautiful Hawaiʻi in Waiʻanae, life has always been adventurous.  My favorite childhood memories include being in church, going to the beach, playing sports, riding ATVʻs, attending big family luʻauʻs and working in my familyʻs loʻi kalo (taro patch) and crop farm.

During high school, I participated in volleyball, canoe paddling and cheerleading. But it was Polynesian Dance that captured my heart.  I continue to travel the globe with my Hula Hālau, sharing Hawaiian, Māʻori, and Tahitian culture and dance with the world.

I am married to my best friend, Paul, and together we have 4 children.  Paul introduced me to Crossfit in 2010.  But it wasnʻt until July 2018 that I would finally join him.  I soon fell in love with the sport and community, and never looked back.  In 2020, when everyone was forced to navigate through a global pandemic, we built a home gym so that our family and friends would have a space to continue Crossfit. It was during this time that my passion to share Crossfit with others evolved.  This eventually led me to obtain my CF-Level 1 certification and start coaching.

I am grateful for this path that God led me to.  Being a wife, a stay at home mom and a coach, I am intentional in maintaining a healthy balance in my life spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally. It is my desire to help others sustain a healthy lifestyle and achieve their fitness goals. Beyond the physical change, I’m always excited to see the personal transformations that our athletes experience through Crossfit.  Come in, give our community at Crossfit Waipiʻo a chance to help YOU live everyday better!

Tamara Maynard

CrossFit Level 2 Trainer (CF-L2)

"Coach T," grew up in Staunton, Virginia. She joined the Army right after high school and Schofield Barracks was her first duty station in 2005. Her Army career was short-lived as she would’ve had to deploy when her daughter was 3 months old. She left the Army and has been traveling the U.S. supporting her husband, who is still serving.

Her CrossFit journey started in 2012 when she decided to quit smoking and joined a CrossFit class at Centurion Crossfit on Fort Hood, Texas. She immediately found her passion and purpose! Coach T obtained her Level 1 in 2015 and took her first coaching position at Crossfit Cochise in Sierra Vista, Arizona. She coached at Evolution Athletics in Spring Lake, North Carolina and realized she wanted to be able to expand her knowledge and be a better coach for her athletes. In 2019, she became a Level 2 CrossFit trainer and then accepted a management and coaching role at Tarheel CrossFit in Spring Lake, North Carolina.  This behind-the-scenes work gave her the opportunity to develop additional skills related to managing the facility, equipment maintenance, and leading both coaches and athletes.  Tarheel Crossfit will always hold a special place in Tamara’s heart.

Coach T found her way back to Oahu in 2020 and opened T’s Sweets LLC., a custom bakery on Schofield Barracks.  Through baking, she’s able to showcase her artwork and satisfy specialty and high-end dessert needs of customers on island.

Although she took a few years off from coaching, she is extremely excited to be back on the floor helping to make an impact in the lives of athletes at Waipi’o.  Her favorite lift is Overhead Squats with a close second being Hang Power Cleans. If you ever find yourself competing, you will definitely be able to  hear her cheering for you.

“CrossFit isn’t just about helping others achieve goals in the gym; it’s a community. Crossfit is a family.  No matter where you are from, and no matter where you go, Crossfit Athletes will always have something in common.”

Born and raised in California I joined the Air Force while studying at San Jose State University. In 2011 while at my first duty station and preparing for a deployment a mentor invited me to “come do some functional fitness,” I was hooked.  I spent the next six years bouncing between different functional fitness and power lifting programs.  In 2017, while stationed in Kansas, my wife Brit dragged me into the local CrossFit affiliate and I experienced my first official CrossFit workout.  I feel in love with the community, teamwork, atmosphere, and not to mention I actually had someone watching and correcting my movement. Shortly after I earned my CF-L1 and began coaching. In 2020, we PCS’d (military moved us) to Hawaii. While coaching at another affiliate I earned my CF-L2 and then we found CrossFit Waipi’o. My wife and I both felt right at home and cannot be more proud of our new gym and can’t wait to help our athlete’s achieve their goals!

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer (CF-L1), Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certified (PN-L1)

I was never an athlete. I grew up in a time where body shaming was the norm, and for a long time, I only knew exercise as a form of punishment and food as a source of shame. In 2018 my journey towards healing began. A friend asked me to join her for a 6 week boot camp at our local CrossFit gym right outside the gates of Fort Riley, Kansas, just five minutes away from my house! I couldn’t think of an excuse not to. My husband was deployed and I knew I needed to do something for ME. As the mom of two little girls and knowing I wanted them to have healthy relationships with food and exercise, I knew I had to break the cycle. I took a risk, went far, far, outside my comfort zone and joined.

Within the walls of that box I didn’t just learn how to squat and deadlift, I learned so much about myself, like that I’m a fighter and I can do hard things. I never new exercise to be fun and for the first time it was. I’ll never get over the feeling of accomplishment after a really tough workout or the excitement of moving towards the next progression in a movement. I loved everything about the gym, from the coaches to the supportive community. It truly was the best thing I ever could have done for myself, mind, body, and soul.

Fast forward to 2020, we moved to Hawaii and it’s prime COVID time. We had to quarantine in our hotel for 2 weeks and all the gyms were closed. About 6 months later the gyms finally opened up and I was feeling revived. I spent a few years at couple different gyms on island but it wasn’t until I walked into CrossFit Waipi'o that I felt at home again. The community was so welcoming and the coaches were all so knowledgeable. I’m so proud and excited to be joining this team. As an athlete I know what it’s like to be the nervous, unsure beginner, and as a coach, I look forward to helping people meet their goals so they too can leave the gym with that same feeling of accomplishment.
